Night at Loaves and Fishes

Ellie Walsh

On Thursday, October 17th, I spent my night, with two other brothers, Jen and Shannon, at Loaves and Fishes. This event was extremely satisfying, and overall a very enjoyable experience. I love the idea of interacting with the Ithaca community outside Cornell. The ability to open up and see into the life of others that live in such close proximity, I find very beneficial. I really appreciated the time I spent there. I was able to learn about the importance of this church for a number of people, and the type of community that has evolved. As many of these individuals share their meals together on a daily or weekly basis. It was a great feeling to be able to see first hand the positive impact that was being made on these individual’s lives. Not only was it enjoyable to interact with individuals we were serving, however it was also great to interact with the other people who dedicate many of their nights, consistently, to Loaves and Fishes.

This event made me more aware of the struggles that everyone faces in the world. With understanding the level of food insecurity in the world, it was helpful to be in contact with a place that helps to satisfy the needs of individuals and to help give security to people. I was very happy that I was able to help, however I wish I were able to give even more. The manager of the soup kitchen also expressed her love and appreciation for APO, as she said, it is very impressive to see individuals so devoted to community service that they are part of a brotherhood founded on this.
